Many students and staff at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University are unaware of the existence of an air-raid (nuclear) shelter hidden beneath the faculty buildings, even though they pass by its emergency exit almost daily.
The shelter was built in the 1950s to protect against aerial bombing attacks. Its location was chosen due to the presence here at the time of the university’s Rectorate – then known as Jan Evangelista Purkyně University, having been renamed by the Communist regime. Over the years, the shelter was primarily used for civil defence purposes; after the Velvet Revolution, it was turned into a storage space.
Along with the nuclear shelter beneath Špilberk Castle and the Denis shelter under Petrov, this facility is another Cold War relic in Brno. It had a capacity for 150 people, who could remain inside for a maximum of two days.
